The essay highlights the paradoxes of contemporary society, where consumer discipline and new technologies have made the boundaries of ‘nature’ uncertain, triggering the need for a redefinition of the legal relationship between the individual and his or her body. The state and international bodies increasingly intrude into the citizens' lives, defining rights and norms and loosening individual ownership and responsibilities with their own bodies.
