Abstract

This contribution offers an overview of schooling in different contexts, ranging from Samoa to Africa, from Europe to South America. The importance of schooling as a widespread social institution and its impact on the lives of individuals and communities is highlighted. The various forms that the process of schooling can take in different cultural contexts are examined, with particular attention to the economic and social aspects involved. Reflections are offered on the centrality of schooling in contemporary society, despite the critical issues and challenges it faces. Finally, a comparison is suggested with the theories on the ‘school form’ for a better understanding of the school as a form of social relations that goes beyond the mere institutional context.
