The focus of this article is on observing and analyzing the ways in which refugees experience being cared for and the relationship between refugees and their caregivers, raising some questions about how the ways in which assistance, or “aid,” is distributed are themselves in danger of weakening individuals' capacities to cope with the problems they encounter. Is it possible that the modes and contexts of “aid” are causing debilitating malaise on people who are in a position where the only possible alternative is to receive?
