Retracing a case of the historical relationship between humanitarian aid and some Palestinian refugee communities in the Jordan Valley, this article investigates the aid relationship and models of assistance by analyzing the links between humanitarian assistance and development ideologies. The contribution focuses, on the one hand, on the ambiguous gift metaphor with which both humanitarian aid and development are clothed, and by which they legitimize their interventions; and, on the other hand, on the meanings attributed to the relationship between cultural identity and place
