Abstract

Based on research conducted in Brussels between 2001 and 2003 among Rwandan refugee and exile communities in Brussels, and through studying the ways in which these communities chose to remember the genocide and observing the commemorative practices and rituals enacted, this article analyzes the changes that have occurred in the way they perceive themselves in interaction with others: can we speak for Rwandans of a reappropriation or re-invention of their ethnic identity as a consequence of the genocide?
