This article explores the concept of cultural heritage in Europe between the 18th and 20th centuries, analysing how heritage practices and representations evolved over time. The article investigates the internal dynamics of patrimonialisation, highlighting how it involved various social groups and covered a wide range of objects, from great monumental works to everyday practices. The growth of patrimonial sensitivity and its integration into cultural policies is examined, as well as the criticisms and challenges related to the management and selection of items to be preserved. The article offers a critical view of the history of heritage, proposing a reflection on its social and political functions in contemporary Europe.
