Abstract

The article explores social structured suffering and vulnerability among homeless drug addicts in the United States. Bourgois adopts a Marxist political-economic perspective, integrating the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault to analyze how the forces of domination and social inequality affect the bodies and minds of the marginalized. Through detailed ethnographic observations, the author critiques social and health policies that criminalize and pathologize those on the margins, highlighting the urgency of recognizing and addressing suffering as a phenomenon deeply embedded in social structures.
