Abstract

This article discusses the legal landscape of marriage in Sweden during the late 1990s, where it was permissible for individuals under eighteen to marry if they were citizens of countries allowing such unions. It explores the unintended consequences of this law, which, despite intending to respect diverse cultures and traditions, ended up undermining the rights of minors. Fadime's case, highlighted in this article, served as a wake-up call, leading to a change in Swedish law in April 2004, establishing eighteen as the minimum age for marriage for all, irrespective of citizenship.
