The text examines the role of religious movements in a post-colonial context, focussing on Caodaism in Vietnam and its leader, Phạm Công Tắc. It emphasises the innovation and activism of Caodaism in promoting a new idea of citizenship and personal purity that opposes Orientalist stereotypes and advocates an anti-colonial agenda. Tắc is described as an innovator who profoundly influenced the emergence of the new religion, but his leadership also led to divisions within the community. The text establishes a link between Tắc and anthropological and post-colonial theories of nationalism and resistance to French domination, sometimes comparing him to M.K. Gandhi.
