Prima di addentraci nella storia di Berhane è opportuno soffermarci brevemente sulla vita dei rifugiati eritrei a Kampala, città che iniziai a frequentare nel 2002. In quel periodo ero solito trascorrere qualche giorno nella capitale ugandese prima di recarmi nelle regioni orientali della Repubblica Democratica del Congo dove conducevo la mia ricerca etnografica.
