Abstract

Contrary to evolutionary theories that predicted the disappearance of spiritual beliefs with the advent of modernity, possession practices manifest in various forms even in contemporary societies, often reinforced by global communication flows. By discussing the various contributions of this issue, this introduction provides an overview of the challenges to the concepts of identity and personhood that possession phenomena present, showcasing their complexity and vitality at the present time.
