The article explores the influence of Pierre Janet’s perspectives on the work of Ernesto de Martino, highlighting how Janet's theoretical framework, known for his studies on psychic dissociation and ‘psychological misery’, has been applied and critically discussed in de Martino's analyses of ritual practices in Southern Italy. Subsequently, it retraces de Martino's integrations in the deepening understanding of religious and psychological phenomena, proposing them as potentially crucial for the contemporary analysis of possession phenomena.
