Abstract

Starting from the experience of the Gambia, a West African republic, former colony and protectorate, and in particular from the history of Fuladu West, one of the districts into which the national territory is divided, the essay addresses two aspects of the debate surrounding the African ‘colony’ and ‘post-colony’: the first examines the everydayness of colonial contact; the second concerns the surfacing of a memory of colonialism in the current political situation of many African states.
