Abstract

This article focuses on the indigenous communities of the lower Oiapoque River region and the Uaçá Basin. It looks at how schools played a significant role in the history of these communities, influencing their identities and cultures. It explores the historical context in which the first schools were initiated, with the aim of ‘civilising’ and ‘civilising’ these populations. The article offers an in-depth analysis of the early school experiences of these indigenous peoples, emphasising the active participation of communities in the educational process. The use of anthropological knowledge as a teaching tool to enhance diversity and foster an effective dialogue between school and indigenous communities is suggested.
