Based on fieldwork conducted in Italy, the article considers the experiences of suffering and practices of activism lived and undertaken by social actors involved in the disasters provoked by asbestos pollution. The data discussed have been collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation in two Italian contexts contaminated with asbestos fibres leaking from asbestos-cement plants set there. In these contexts, actors suffering from the pollution’s effects undertook practices of socio-political engagement. The article’s objective is to reflect on the relationships between asbestos-related disasters’ experiences and anti-asbestos activism emerged from them. Data discussion highlights some characteristics of asbestos-related disasters’ processes as well as of the practices elaborated by involved actors to face them.
