Abstract

In recent years, the number of age-related diseases has increased, which has led to a need for reflection and radical changes in the medical field to meet the health challenges of an increasingly elderly and frail population. Despite progress in overcoming age-related prejudice, discriminatory attitudes towards older people are still widespread and rarely condemned. Ageism and related behaviours have psychological roots linked to the fear of physical decline and death, exacerbated by medical advances that make illness chronic and increase multimorbidity. Today's society, focussed on individualism and appearance, often denies and discriminates against old age.
