"Craftsmanship" has been a keyword of the cultural debate since the XIX century. Scholars and practitioners have long been debating the meaning of the word. This essay ethnographically explores the use of this concept in a craftsman community: Valenza, a city internationally known for its high quality, hand-made jewelry production. The analysis of the rhetoric associated with this concept shows that "craftsmanship" does not only relate to production but portrays the cultural basis of the entire community, its transformation and the new economic and social challenges it faces.
