Abstract

Based on fieldwork conducted in southwestern Ghana, the article analyses the distinction between manifest and latent forms of possessions — the former explicit during Nzema ritual ceremonies through sacred dances, the latter observed in daily life. Possession emerges as a complex social relationship between humans and the divine, influenced by family and community dynamics and regulated by political categorizations and the distribution of spiritual powers
