Abstract

The article explores the theatrical dimension of possession within the vodou religion of Haiti. Distinguishing between ritual possession by benevolent loa and that by malevolent spirits, it emphasizes the desirability and deliberate nature of the former. The study highlights the performative aspect, observing that the possessed conform to the classical images of mythic characters, differing from the personal symptomatic expression observed in hysteria. Discussing the role of the sanctuary's hidden spaces in aiding the preparation and transformation of individuals into their possessed state, it ultimately demonstrates how cultural and ritual contexts shape these experiences.
