Abstract

Establishing a sensible international comparison of reading habits has proven difficult because of the phenomenon's complexity under scrutiny. These difficulties are  confirmed by the recent publication of a research promoted by the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF, 2024) which compares national book market structures through field analysis carried out throughout spring  2024 in nineteen countries. The research reports some basic indices on reading and purchasing in each country. It compares the weight of the main genres of books purchased, highlighting that the main core of purchases reflects above all intrinsic motivations for reading, which are also transversal to traditional market classifications. Regarding the weight of the different purchasing channels, most buyers use both physical and online channels. The research also confirms that, in the competitive process, the strengths of independent physical bookstores primarily concern the offer of a pleasant purchasing experience and their easy accessibility.
