CALL FOR PAPERS 2023

2022-03-27

MONOGRAPHS SECTION

After a long decade of silence, four important international conferences (Moscow 2013, Sheffield 2015, Paris 2015, Stanford 2015) celebrated the centennial of the birth of Russian formalism, a movement whence emerged a science of literature (Bottiroli 2006). The crisis of structuralism, on the one hand, and growing aversion to theory in the humanities, on the other, paradoxically marginalized the last century’s most original and irreverent current of thought. The numerous recent publications dedicated to the formalist school reveal the need to achieve some continuity in discussion on concepts, themes, and questions that the formalists had identified, regimented, and elaborated but not fully developed.

This is the background for the establishment of a new magazine, Vremennik russkogo formalizma, marking the start of a new phase of discussion, incorporating the outcomes of twentieth-century critical thinking reevaluated in the light of the new heuristics of the twenty-first.

We are ready to collect and amplify contributions from all of you who believe that the momentum of formalist thinking is not yet exhausted, that it has yet to run its course.

With the aim of sparking bountiful discussion, the first issue aims to reconstruct the historical-cultural dynamics of the context of the protagonists and ideas of the formalist school. The issue originates in the awareness we still lack a sound reconstruction of Russian formalism of sufficient breadth and depth to describe its identity. This is a challenge that can be undertaken—cognizant, naturally, of the broad proportions such work will take—because it is only by sketching a map of the dialectical relations among protagonists, associated figures, students, epigones, and antagonists that we can obtain a more accurate, and more authentic, profile of the movement.

We welcome contributions on:

  1. Formalism and environs: sympathizers and adversaries.
  2. OPOJAZ and MLK: affinities and divergences
  3. Formalists and politics
  4. Formalists and academia
  5. Formalists in literary journals
  6. Formalists and publishers
  7. The artistic side of Formalism
