María Velasco’s plays in contemporary Spanish theatre

María Velasco (Burgos, 1984) is one of the most interesting young playwrights in contemporary Spain. This paper focuses on some of her most successful texts, such as Perros en danza, about the Second Spanish Republic and Civil War, La ceremonia de la confusión, about the social and political background at the time of the Movida, or Líbrate de las cosas hermosas que te deseo, a play about personal and cultural identity. The aim is to show her social commitment and her peculiar theatrical style. What most characterises her plays is the way she creates her characters and the relationship between them, the intertextuality and the vivid presence of the author, that never completely disappears from the stage.
