Abstract

The paper presents the results of a pilot study aimed at investigating the effects of several critical features of orally delivered speeches on the simultaneous interpreter’s linguistic output. To this end a Spanish source speech (SS) and its corresponding Italian target speech (TS) were taken from the multilingual interpreting corpus EPIC (European Parliament Interpreting Corpus) and analysed. The interpreter’s TS, which is typically produced under tight time constraints and on the basis of a short string of SS words at a time, displayed several features, among which simplified syntactic patterns such as parataxis, strategies aimed at condensing the SS while preserving cohesion and coherence, disfluencies and the omissions of pragmatically relevant items.
