Destruction of character and blurring of the lyrical subject: Lorca, Valente, Novo

This article deals with the poetic representation of the broken subjectivities of characters who were victimized by different embodiments of power. Poems by Spanish authors Federico García Lorca, José Ángel Valente and Olga Novo are analyzed as examples of works which question the role of language in repressive practices. These poems show linguistic traits that can be explained as forms of the authors’ reluctance to reintegrate the expression of traumatic experiences into the same discourse sustained by the victimizers. Such disruption supports the correlation between the characters’ degradation and the poets’ violence on standard language usage.
