Prepositions, motion particles and rhetorical style in SSL: a view from Cognitive Linguistics

This paper presents two studies on space and motion from the viewpoint of Cognitive Linguistics and its application to SSL. The first discusses the polysemy of prepositions (por and para). It is argued that a motivated structure for prepositional usages could facilitate the learners’ task. The second develops the concept of rhetorical style in relation to motion events in Italian and Spanish. Despite being Romance languages, their linguistic resources are different, what can arguably explain differences in their rhetorical styles and acquisition.
