novelistas, y también el mejor, con mucho, de todos ellos, es Benito Pérez Galdós”:
This is how Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, expressed himself in an article in Solos (1881: 19). It is an early and clairvoyant judgement, typical of the man who was to become the best contemporary critic of Galdós.
And a judgement that has not lost its relevance today.
