Metaphor in the configuration of medical lexicon of Enlightenment Guatemala: some examples from José Felipe Flores’ Instrucción sobre el modo de practicar la inoculación de las viruelas

Abstract

Although historical study of American medical lexicon is not a new subject anymore, some areas like Guatemala have not been considered enough by scholars. Because of that, this paper aims to provide with new data analysing the use of metaphor for the creation of Guatemalan medical lexicon; for this purpose, the Instrucción sobre el modo de practicar la inoculación de las viruelas, published by doctor José Felipe Flores in Guatemala City in 1794, will be analysed.
