Abstract

This paper is an answer to Murillo (2016), who claims that conclusion and reformulation are two intertwined notions when considered from the perspective of Relevance Theory: while reformulation markers contribute to the explicit content of an utterance, conclusion markers contribute to the implicit content of an utterance. On this basis, there would be a mixed class of reformulation-conclusive markers. This paper insists on defending the need for reformulation and conclusion to be considered distinct theoretical discourse relations, which does not mean that, in practice, discourse markers displaying reformulative values cannot display also conclusive values, both at a type and at a token level.
