The syntagmatic information in contemporary Spanish lexicography: multi-word units, lexicographic examples and other cotextual items

The purpose of this article consists in offering a broad theoretical framework for a homogeneous description of the different types of syntagmatic information that can be found in the microstructure of dictionaries. As a starting point, a description of each syntagmatic item will be provided, which comprises a series of general observations and concrete examples found in contemporary Spanish dictionaries. Based upon these descriptions, a set of rules which attempt to achieve a more efficient treatment of syntactic information in accordance with the genuine function of each dictionary will be created. For this study, a strictly metalexicographic, and not a phraseological, framework has been chosen. It takes into account current approaches from the theory of dictionary form and the theory of lexicographic functions.
